A home solar system for an apartment, a house or a villa with no grid: the Felicity inverter, batteries and panel count for each, with the sums shown.

Someone looking for a home solar system usually wants one answer: what exactly do I buy, and how many of each. This article answers with three sizes — an apartment, a house and a villa, all running with no grid — whose parts are read from the ready-made systems pages the site computes from Felicity's product records. Every figure can be recomputed with your own appliances in the system calculator.

The parts of an off-grid home solar system

A system that does not lean on the grid has three lines, and one question decides each:

  • The inverter is decided by the highest momentary load: everything running at once, plus the start of the largest motor.
  • The batteries are decided by a full day's consumption, because an off-grid system is sized for 24 hours of autonomy, not for a few hours of outage.
  • The panels are decided by daily consumption divided by sun hours, with a performance ratio of 0.75 for off-grid systems.

The three lines also have to agree: the battery's voltage inside the battery range the inverter's record states, the array under its maximum PV input. In all three sizes below the battery is the same model, the 51.2 V FLA48500, and each off-grid inverter named accepts that voltage.

Size 1: an apartment using 13.8 kWh a day

The load is a 1.5-ton air conditioner running 8 hours (9.6 kWh), a fridge (1.2), lighting and Wi-Fi (1.6), a TV (0.6) and a washing machine (0.8). The peak is 4,850 W: 2,450 W running, and 2,400 W added by the air conditioner starting.

  • Inverter: IVEM5048, 5 kW, battery range 42-63 V, maximum PV input 6 kW.
  • Battery: a full day is 13.8 kWh, so one FLA48500, 25 kWh, of which the calculator counts 22.5 kWh as usable.
  • Panels: 13.8 ÷ (5.7 × 0.75) = 3.23 kWp, so six 580 W panels (3.48 kWp) on about 16 m².

Details and prices are on the off-grid apartment system page.

Size 2: a house using 25.4 kWh a day

The house adds a second air conditioner and kitchen appliances (microwave and kettle, 2,000 W for an hour). Consumption is 25.4 kWh and the peak 8,050 W.

  • Inverter: IVAM10048P1G1, 10 kW, two MPPT inputs, maximum PV input 20 kW, IP65.
  • Batteries: 25.4 kWh is needed and one unit gives 22.5, so two FLA48500 in parallel: 50 kWh nominal, 45 kWh counted usable.
  • Panels: 25.4 ÷ 4.275 = 5.94 kWp, so eleven 580 W panels (6.38 kWp) on about 29 m².

This is the off-grid house system.

Size 3: a villa using 49.53 kWh a day

Four air conditioners, a fridge, a freezer, two lighting circuits, two TVs, a washing machine, a 1 HP water pump and the kitchen. The peak is 11,700 W, under the 12,000 W above which the calculator moves to three-phase.

  • Inverter: IVAM12048P1G1, 12 kW, single-phase, maximum PV input 24 kW.
  • Batteries: 49.53 ÷ 22.5 = 2.2, so three FLA48500: 75 kWh nominal, 67.5 kWh counted usable. The battery's record allows up to 15 units in parallel.
  • Panels: 49.53 ÷ 4.275 = 11.59 kWp, so twenty 580 W panels (11.6 kWp) on about 52 m².

What to know about the FLA48500 battery

Its record states a nominal 51.2 V, 500 Ah, 25 kWh, more than 6,000 cycles, a depth of discharge of 95% or more, floor mounting, and 718 × 380 × 990 mm at 218 kg. The weight is the figure to plan for before buying: three units for the villa weigh 654 kg and need a floor that carries them. The rest is in the FLA48500 datasheet.

If the grid does reach you

An off-grid system has the largest battery of any, because it carries the whole day. Where power arrives and then cuts for some hours, a backup system on a hybrid inverter needs far less storage: the same apartment needs 2.3 kWh for four hours instead of 13.8 kWh for a day. Choose backup mode and the hours in the calculator and watch the battery line change.

The sun hours behind the sums

Every figure above is computed for 5.7 peak sun hours a day. On a less sunny site the panel count rises while the batteries and the inverter stay as they are, since they follow consumption and peak, not sunshine.

Ordering and collection

The price on each product page is the price you pay; prices for the Saudi market are on the Felicity in Saudi Arabia page. Orders are collected from our store in Dubai or Riyadh, and the WhatsApp button is on every page if you want to ask before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the parts of an off-grid home solar system?

An off-grid inverter that stands the peak load, batteries that cover a full day of consumption, and panels that recharge them. In Felicity's house system: one IVAM10048P1G1 10 kW inverter, two FLA48500 51.2 V batteries and eleven 580 W panels.

How many batteries does a villa solar system need?

A villa using 49.53 kWh a day with no grid needs three FLA48500 batteries: the calculator counts 22.5 kWh usable from each 25 kWh unit, and 49.53 ÷ 22.5 = 2.2.

How many panels for a house with two air conditioners?

Eleven 580 W panels for a house using 25.4 kWh a day off-grid: 25.4 ÷ (5.7 sun hours × 0.75) = 5.94 kWp. They take about 29 m² of roof.

Is a 5 kW inverter enough for an apartment solar system?

Yes, when the peak stays under 5,000 W. An apartment with one 1.5-ton air conditioner, a fridge, lighting, a TV and a washing machine peaks at 4,850 W, and its system page names the 5 kW IVEM5048.
